THE ARTIST
Memory,
place and
possibility.
Karl Wennergren works primarily in oil, as well as watercolor and printmaking. His work often depicts abandoned places along the borders of modern society — spaces caught between worlds.
Rather than painting solely from direct observation, Wennergren frequently returns to these places through memory. The resulting paintings become an exploration of what is remembered, what is imagined and the uncertain territory between the two.
His paintings often capture small moments of something transcendent, fleeting and fragile: something intangible that is about to happen, or perhaps pass without notice.
Wennergren's work has been exhibited in galleries and institutions throughout Europe and the United States, including the MEAM Museum in Barcelona, Liljevalchs in Stockholm and Sotheby's in New York City.
He lives and works in Lund, Sweden.

Wennergren's relationship with Ambleside Gallery includes his participation in the gallery's 2018 exhibition Realism in Search of Reality in Greensboro, North Carolina.
His work brings a contemporary psychological sensibility to the tradition of realist painting, exploring places that feel both recognizable and strangely removed from ordinary life.
