THE ARTIST
A second
life in
making.
At 52, after a long career in education and mental health, Nancy Carroll made an unexpected decision: she enrolled full-time in woodworking school.
With little previous experience using tools or machinery, the transition demanded a new kind of precision and discipline.
But strict measurements soon gave way to something more instinctive. Carroll began creating five-foot asparagus spears, sculptural furniture and a chair inspired by the form of a Luna moth.
What began as technical training became a new artistic life centered on observation, material and the unexpected forms found in the natural world.

WOOD
From the
chicken coop
to the studio.
Carroll's first studio occupied the chicken coop of an old barn — an environment that quickly found its way into her work.
She carved large portraits of exotic chickens and created what she called “Chickendale” furniture from saplings, boards and carved bird forms.
The vegetable aisle became another source of discovery. Fennel, leeks, artichokes and other produce revealed unexpected structures and extraordinary colors when cut open.
Carroll eventually discovered that the same carving process could capture the likeness of animals and people from a flat piece of wood.
NATURAL FORMS
Looking
closer at
the familiar.
After moving to a coastal community, Carroll's subjects expanded to include swan families, seaside buildings and migrating fish.
Across media, her practice begins with the same impulse: looking closely at forms that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
In her paintings, flowers become an opportunity to explore color, gesture, rhythm and the individuality of natural forms.
