Wendy Musser Fleck
THE ARTIST
Wendy Musser Fleck is a North Carolina landscape painter whose work grows from direct observation of place, atmosphere and changing light.
Born in Greensboro, Fleck studied at Peace College and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
She later returned to school to study Interior Design at Meredith College before renewing her focus on studio painting.
Her work in oil and pastel reflects a lifelong interest in the relationship between color, landscape and the experience of being present in nature.
THE WORK
A landscape is never still.
PLEIN AIR
Fleck began studying plein air pastel painting in 2001, drawn to the challenge of working directly within the landscape.
Light changes quickly. Weather shifts. Birds, insects, temperature and movement become part of the experience while the painter works to hold onto a single moment.
Pastel became especially important to her process because of its immediacy and broad range of color. Paintings begun outdoors are often brought close to completion on site.
Back in the studio, those works may be refined or become the starting point for larger paintings developed from the memory and atmosphere of the original place.
CELEBRATING LANDSCAPES
Fleck's goal is to capture the beauty of places she has discovered and give viewers the feeling that they might want to stand in those places themselves.
Her paintings preserve moments that are temporary by nature: a passing cloud, changing light, distant color or the particular atmosphere of a landscape.
The work becomes both an observation of nature and an invitation to slow down long enough to notice it.
